The Election and HE

With four weeks until the election, it’s now a little clearer what each of the main parties' HE-related proposals are. Despite hope to the contrary, it now looks like the Conservative Party will resist calls to remove international students from the migration cap, and will instead reiterate its hope to reduce overall immigration to the ‘tens of thousands’. Labour has this week announced its education proposals, including the re-introduction of the Education Maintenance Allowance, restoring student grants, and scrapping tuition on courses for adult learners looking to re-train. The Liberal Democrat’s proposals are expected to be announced shortly.

Meanwhile, Universities UK and other HE organisations have set out what their priorities would be for the incoming administration. UUK suggest 5 priorities for the new government, and there are proposals from University Alliance and the Russell Group. In other news, a poll undertaken by HEPI suggest that 55% of students will vote for Labour, compared to just 18% for the Conservatives. One of the rare demographics where Jeremy Corbyn enjoys a lead over his opponent.
