What are the implications of demographic changes for your role?

19 August 2015      Matt Sisson, Projects and Membership Manager

Many roles in HEI professional services are impacted by demographic changes – and particularly the ageing nature of the UK workforce. The increasing costs of pensions is often the most obvious consequence, but beyond pensions and payroll there are considerations for wider university funding, insurance, tax, procurement, management, and more.

Mercer has recently surveyed 80 companies and produced a report and accompanying infographic on the Ageing workforce and the future workplace, which summarises some of the challenges and puts the size of the issue in context. The report is accompanied by a number of introductory videos and other resources relating to specific areas that could help you get your head around where to start when considering the impact of demographic changes on your area of work.

While the Mercer work includes understanding the benefits of an older workforce, Sally Feldman has an article in the Times Higher on why it’s not fair for older academics to ‘go on forever’.
