Donations to Universities have passed the £1bn mark for the first time, according to the latest annual CASE survey of philanthropic giving in HE. This is an increase of 23% on 2016, despite a small decrease in the overall number of donors. Interestingly, the increase comes following a 16% increase in investment in fundraising, and a 10% increase in spending on Alumni relations.
The source of donations is also interesting, with £322m donated from alumni, £149m from non-alumni individuals, £442m from trusts and charities, and £82m from companies. While the donation culture in the sector is no doubt changing, the overall figure continues to be dominated by a small number of large donations to, in general, larger institutions. The story is covered in the Guardian, here.
