Hearts and minds battle over divestment

10 July 2018      Matt Sisson, Projects and Membership Manager

In case you missed it last week, there’s a forthcoming webinar on divestment on Monday 16th July. The decision to divest from fossil fuels is not straightforward, as many Universities find out when they start to consider it. As our pension schemes are implicated, along with endowment funds and university investment funds, hearts and minds wrestle with each other to find the right answer. Sian Ferguson was a recent speaker at our Midlands Finance Directors meeting and has now written to invite BUFDG members to the webinar on the 16th from 4-5pm. The invitation to “Aligning University Investments With Carbon Reduction Goals Through Fossil Fuel Divestment in the UK” is open to university trustees, bursars, students, professors, administrators, faculty, managers, advisors and OCIOs in the US, UK, South Africa, Austria, and other countries around the world.

At the webinar you’ll learn more about the DivestInvest movement and explore what factors led some institutions to make a commitment to fossil fuel divestment, the link with other carbon reduction measures, what the expected process and timeframe is for divestment at each institution, and why the SFCT thinks it is important for universities to be involved in the DivestInvest movement. Participants will hear from Ian Matthews, Chief Financial Officer at Trinity College Dublin, Jon Gluyas, The Dean of Knowledge Exchange and Director of The Durham Energy Institute at Durham University, and Sian Ferguson, Trust Executive for Ashden Trust, Mark Leonard Trust, and JJ Charitable Trust, three of The Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts.
