Ideas for 'quick' data interrogation

07 March 2018      Matt Sisson, Projects and Membership Manager

In discussions with colleagues, more and more institutions seem to be undertaking some form of data interrogation for counter-fraud/error purposes, either using Excel, modules within their financial systems, or third-party products such as Idea.

At a recent meeting the idea came up to have a discussion post where colleagues could post and share analysis they had done, so that other colleagues could get ideas for analysis to do when time/resources allow. Here are three from the recent round of counter-fraud meetings to get the ball rolling:

  1. Benford's Law - check run against invoice numbers
  2. Checking supplier addresses against employee addresses, and investigating any matches
  3. Searching Companies House for all companies registered to the same postcode as the University. Do you know about all of these? Are there any conflicts of interest? Any potential payroll issues?

Please post any of your ideas/checks on the discussion post here.
