...and the DfE keeps stirring the pot

And while we’re on the topic, the DfE has been busy examining the evidence for perhaps a bigger shake-up of the funding system than the OfS has been letting on. Firstly, they commissioned the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) to analyse the latest LEO (Longitudinal Education Outcomes) dataset, and look at how different degrees studied at different institutions affect graduate earnings. It makes a big statement about controlling for variables such as class, ethnicity, and prior achievement but it’s still a complicated picture (especially below the line…).

Secondly, the Department wrote to all V-Cs asking for your university’s participation in a study, handled by KPMG, examining the costs of running different courses at different universities. The turnaround time is July, which is very quick, and only seems to make sense if it is being turned around in time for the interim report of the post-18 review, due in the Autumn.
