University financial data from HESA

This week has seen HESA release its annual data on the finances of HEIs. This year’s summary is of 16/17 financial data, and reveals a 2.7% increase in income to £35.7 billion. A corresponding 4.4% increase in expenditure has seen surpluses drop from 6.8% to 6.4% of income. As usual, the picture is quite different across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The figures – particularly around reserves – have unfortunately been misinterpreted by some. We’re working to produce an explanatory article in the next few days. Watch this space!
