THRIVING OR SURVIVING? Developing personal resilience as an HE professional
The HE profession is known to be amongst the most demanding for managing others’ emotions and is therefore at higher risk of the stressors known to impact on mental health. The high intensity of emotional management often arises when handling organisational change initiatives, redundancy/furlough programmes, interpersonal conflict, union disputes, as well as disciplinary and grievance cases. Whilst HR actively supports the wellbeing of others, it’s rare that professionals spend time learning how to strengthen their own resilience to better ride the waves of today’s turbulent world, where increased isolation has become the norm.
This action learning experience, underpinned by psychological research, gives you the knowledge, tools and techniques to better manage your own wellbeing, ensuring you thrive, not just survive.
Scheduled over a 3-week period, you will be able to experiment with new routines, redesigned support mechanisms, self-awareness exercises, different ways of thinking and responding to external events, while monitoring the effect on your wellbeing.
Learning Steps
Step 1: Structured self-assessment exercise (1 hour self-guided)
Step 2: On-line session (2.5 hrs) with fellow participants (max 6) covering the key evidence-based interventions for building resilience, including a focus on self-efficacy, positive psychology, mindfulness and cognitive reframing.
Step 3: Self-guided action learning over the course of 2 weeks, with reflections to be recorded daily in your Thrive Diary.
Step 4: Facilitated lunchtime Mindful Meditation practice (40 minutes)
Step 5: On-line session (2 hrs) with fellow participants to review and share learning, with further tools including the ‘Five Essentials’ for thriving, and how to ‘maintain your parachute’.
Step 6: Ongoing networking and support with your action learning colleagues
