Staff/student phishing scam alerts

13 February 2018      Matt Sisson, Projects and Membership Manager

There have been new attempts to recruit students at a number of HEIs as money mules, via a phishing email that claims to offer them a job. This is a variation on the fraud from last year, explained three posts down this thread. In short, the scammers email the user with an offer of a part-time contract, with the intention of gaining their credentials/identification paperwork, and then further exploit the user to transfer money into other accounts (money laundering). Please alert your staff and students to make them aware of the threat.

Last year, the above fraud arrived hand-in-hand with the use of phishing emails to attempt to access the payroll self-service section of university internal websites, in order to divert monthly staff pay. It might be worth brushing up on the information in the top post in this thread, and maybe even asking your IT team to run a dummy attack on your own staff, in order to raise awareness in your HEI. It is quite likely that we will see a resurgence of this again at some point this year.
