Genuine HMRC contact information updated

07 July 2020      Andrea Marshall, Tax Specialist

HMRC have updated their Guidance on Genuine HMRC contact to include three new categories:

1.1 Emails about consignor and consignee sites for imports and exports

You may receive an email from HMRC in July 2020 asking for your comments to help us develop our understanding of the:

  • capacity of consignor and consignee sites for imports and exports
  • number of proposed movements from 31 December 2020

The email will not ask for any personal or financial information.

1.2 Emails and letters to research the trading behaviour of businesses in Northern Ireland

During July and August 2020 HMRC will work with Ipsos MORI (an independent research company) to carry out research with businesses in Northern Ireland to help us to improve our understanding of their trading behaviour. This will also allow us to support the businesses, and help them prepare for the end of the transition period.

You may receive a letter, or email from Ipsos MORI and HMRC inviting you to take part in the research. It will not ask for any financial information.

You do not have to take part in the study but we encourage you to help us improve our services for our customers. If you do decide to take part all of your answers will be confidential.

1.3 Letter, email or phone call about off-payroll working education and support

Between July 2020 and April 2021 HMRC is delivering an education programme to customers to help them prepare for changes to the off-payroll working rules (also known as IR35) due to come into force on 6 April 2021.

You may receive a letter, email or phone call from us about changes to the rules. We may:

  • share guidance on how to prepare
  • ask questions to check if you are ready for the changes
  • provide support to help you prepare for the changes
  • direct you to more information on the GOV.UK website
  • ask for your feedback, so we can improve future education activities

We encourage you to take part in the programme, and we will not ask you for any personal financial information.
