A couple of new fraud alerts

There have been a couple of new fraud alerts in the last week or so. Firstly, in a variation on a familiar theme – some suppliers of one university were contacted for quotations from a genuine university email address (a student's, which was presumably hacked), but the signature block used was that of the Head of Procurement, lending legitimacy to the emails. It is likely that other Heads of Procurement will be targeted to give a false veneer of credibility to potential frauds. Please be aware that student email addresses could now be a target for frauds of this nature, particularly out of term time.

Secondly, there has been an email phishing scam whereby the ‘name’ of the email sender is a university finance director, even though the actual email address is random and unrelated. Because the content of the email also includes some of the finance director’s details, it may appear to be genuine with a quick, uncritical glance. Please ensure your staff are aware of how to spot scam or phishing emails of this nature.
