27 March 2020      Julia Ascott, Employment Taxes Specialist

You may have watched yesterday afternoon, the Chancellor announced measures to help support self-employed individuals during the Covid-19 crisis, at a similar level to the support given to employees.  The measures can be found here, but in summary:

  • self-employed individuals or partnerships can receive a grant worth 80% of their profits up to a cap of £2,500 per month
  • grant size will be based on average profits from tax returns in 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19
  • eligible individuals:
    • more than half of their income comes from self-employment and
    • who have profits of less than £50,000 and
    • have lost trading/partnership trading profits due to COVID-19;

Grants are not expected to be paid out until late June.
