Eleanor has worked at Grant Thornton for almost 13 years, 10 of which have been specialising in Global Mobility. She supports her clients on a variety of matters including policy design, management of expatriate populations, and cross border taxation and social security compliance.

Robin Bailey - Tax Director - Mazars

Robin is a director within Mazars Global Mobility team. He has over 17 years’ experience in expatriate taxation, providing employers with practical tax efficient solutions that consider the tax and non-tax considerations of managing internationally mobile employees (IME), whilst ensuring they are compliant. Robin has worked with a number of HE institutions to help them regularise their employment tax and payroll compliance obligations for their remote workers. He has also provided several other employers in the HE sector with ad hoc advice, including social security contribution guidance for University employees working with the UN on JV projects, and tax advice in respect of commuters
Robin provides thought leadership on topical technical issues, speaking at several industry events and writing articles, with a focus on the Higher Education sector. Robin presented on how to manage STBV in the June 2021 BUFDG annual conference and guidance on managing remote workers in the 2022 conference. Plus, he has provided BUFDG with training sessions on social security contributions for IME, and tax and social security considerations for remote workers.

Susan Ball - Partner - RSM

Susan is a partner at RSM, Susan works in their Employer Solutions team and has over 35 years' experience in employment related taxation, investigations and reward field. She advises clients across a range of sectors. Susan is the immediate past President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) having stepped down at the end of May 2023, she sits on the CIOT Council and the Employment Taxes Committee. She is a Fellow of CIOT and a member of ATT. Susan is an experienced industry speaker, she writes regularly for several publications. Also liaising regularly with HMRC on relevant sector specific issues.

Patrick Crookes - Tax Director - Mazars

Patrick has over 15 years’ experience in Employment Taxes, specialising and assisting clients in particular with CIS, CJRS and IR35. Patrick is actively involved with the BUFDG Payroll & Expenses Group both at a national and regional level. He has been a regular speaker on Employment Tax matters at the annual BUFDG conference. He also sits on the CIOT’s Examinations team and Employment Taxes Technical Committee.
Patrick has extensive experience advising HEI clients on Employment Taxes issues including, setting up policies and procedures to ensure compliance with the off-payroll workers legislation, helping HEI organisations undertake employment status for tax assessments, advising on the tax treatment of stipends, honorariums, bursaries, royalties from intellectual property, and reviewing expense policies and benefit in kind arrangements, including the implementation of salary sacrifice schemes for ultra-low emission cars.

He works with a variety of clients, including a number of Higher Education providers, supporting them with their mobility policies, cross border taxation issues and compliance requirements.

Marie Green - Director - Vialto

Marie leads Vialto Partners’ Higher Education offering globally and advises universities on both domestic and overseas employment tax matters. She has 25 years’ experience helping organisations both in the public and private sector manage employment tax risk, establish robust policies and processes to maximise efficiencies and manage costs. Marie works closely with a significant number of universities helping them to implement their Internationalisation strategies. Recent projects include leading the setup of a JEI in China, hosting a number of global mobility risk workshops, helping HEI’s with understanding the implications of having academics working overseas throughout COVID, supporting a HEI with implementing the right policy and process for the future, advising on senior academic moves from a tax, social security and payroll perspective.

Caroline Jones - Employment Tax Director -  BDO

Caroline started her career as an inspector with HMRC and has worked for 26 years in Big Four accountancy firms. Immediately before joining BDO in November 2019, she spent a year working as the Employment Tax Specialist for BUFDG. Whilst there, as well as providing general employment tax related support, she worked extensively with universities facing the challenge of HMRC’s off-payroll labour rules. With over 46 years of experience in the employment tax arena, she is experienced in providing a wide range of employment tax advice in all aspects of employer compliance and employment tax risk advising HEIs including assisting with HMRC PAYE compliance reviews and helping employers navigate the new world of hybrid working.

Jennifer Lee - Senior Manager - PwC

Jen is a Senior Manager in the Southern Indirect Tax team at PwC with over 10 years’ experience in advising Government and Public sector organisations. Her experience includes VAT planning in respect of large capital projects, advising on complex international indirect tax matters, coordinating global indirect compliance and advising on large transactions. Jen works closely with over 30 Universities.

Andrew Marsden - Customs Duty Manager - Grant Thornton

Andy is a Customs Duty Manager working within the indirect tax practice at Grant Thornton. He has about 7 years of international trade experience, having worked both in practice and within HMRC's Large Business directorate. Well versed in the careful implementation and management of duty relief schemes, Andy has helped clients reduce costs and improve cash flow by using such reliefs, whilst ensuring the integration of such schemes does not adversely impact on existing processes. ​Andy’s experience within HMRC gives a useful insight into the requirements for customs authorisations and simplifications.

Laura Mee - Senior Manager - Vialto

Laura has over 18 years' experience covering income tax, social security, employer reporting and payroll obligations in relation to international working. She is part of our HE specialist team, focusing on universities in Scotland/Wales. Recent HE experience includes helping universities to manage the risks of employees working overseas, with particular focus in China following the lifting of the Covid related travel restrictions. Laura has also helped a number of universities claim credits in the UK for overseas taxes paid by using a technology to process multiple calculations more quickly, accurately and cost-effectively.

Paul has over 38 years’ experience of employment tax. Paul joined BDO in February 2019 after 17 years’ working in the Big 4.  Prior to this, Paul spent 7 years’ within HMRC Large Business Service as a senior investigator with responsibility for employment tax compliance within Pubic Sector organisations. 
Paul has significant experience on the complex tax/NIC issues associated with the temporary labour market and off-payroll labour matters, including the employment intermediaries’ legislation, employment status/IR35 and the use of employment agencies. Paul currently advises on key employment related issues such as employment status/IR35, salary exchange, expenses and benefits reporting and termination payments.
He also supports clients in dealing with their relationship with HMRC.
