FCA's new Anti-greenwashing Rule - a brief summary for HEPs

21 March 2025      Rachel Ward, Learning and Development Manager

Sustainability, and the wider ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) agenda - is a key, current and highprofile issue for lots of organisations. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has become increasingly concerned that some registered ‘firms’ (organisations) are making misleading sustainability-related claims regarding their services (and products) and tackling ‘greenwashing’ is now high on the regulatory agenda.

Given that many universities and higher education providers (HEPs) have some form of registration with the
FCA because of the nature of their wider activities, the FCA's anti-greenwashing rules- which came into effect
on 31 May 2024 - have the potential to impact the HE sector.

Working with Keith Read, a consultant on compliance, we have created a brief summary for HEPs. The summary includes:

  • An introduction to the anti-greenwashing rules
  • The actions of the FCA
  • Actions for a HEP

You can view the brief summary (just 2 pages) for HEPs here.  If you have any questions, please contact Rachel.
