Employment status common roles: External Examiners

Back in 2023, Caroline Jones (of then BDO) delivered a series of employment status sessions looking at particular, common roles within the higher education sector. Caroline is back (now Albert Goodman) to update and refresh these sessions for 2026, given the changes in case law and HMRC interpretation.
This session is looking at the role of an external examiner, who can have a variety of different requirements, including:
Verify academic standards are appropriate – reviewing modules/courses
Ensure national comparability of standards
Rigorous/fair assessment process
Feedback on assessments, advice on content.
Caroline will talk through the tax/NIC position, going through different scenarios and end with a sizeable Q&A section for those of you who have specific circumstances they would like to talk through.
